i lost my purse with everything will i be charged for fraud?

i lost my purse weeks ago while shopping with my girlfriends. i didnt notice that it was missing until after i got home. after dinner time i went to my car to look for it and couldnt find it so i went back to the store the next day to the lost and found. they found nothing. So theni reported to my bank that i lost my purse with my checkbook in it along with my id and atm card. a week later a total of $4000 of checks were written and bounced. Now im getting intimidating calls and letters from these stores! I guess the person who found my purse passed as me when wrote the checks and was identified by the cashiers with my id. What should i do? Does identity thieves usually get caught? Im in a jam and need help. Isnt there security cameras in the stores when this person wrote the checks and used my id? Will i be the one responsible for fruad?
