Repubs tried to suppress Dem votes with excessive & unnecessary voter ID laws. Judges said, “Show us why this law is needed. Where’s the voter fraud?” U.S. Attorneys could only find a few dozen cases where non-citizens accidentally registered to vote by filling out paperwork pushed at them by minimum-wage street workers hired by political parties. Those non-citizens didn’t know they had registered & had no intention of voting. Bush said “prosecute ‘em anyway.” Attorneys said, “no way.” Bush fired Attorneys in his attempt to rig elections by suppressing votes of qualified voters who lacked newly required forms of ID. (In the last election, I was disenfranchised because, even tho I had a state-issued “Voter ID card” w/current address, my Driver’s License had old address. For that, stealing MY vote, Bush should be impeached!)
If you google “voter fraud,” you’ll get a deluge of right-wing wacko sites talking about “suspicion of voter fraud.” If you do some real research, you’ll find only 5 or 6 convictions for voter fraud in the last 20 years, mostly of poll-workers. Nobody is insane enough to risk jail just for one crooked vote.
Before they lost Congress, Repubs were planning a national voter ID law.
Nobody has ever been convicted of going to the poll & trying to vote illegally. Why would anyone try that, risking years in jail for 1 vote? Only 2 reasons for voter ID: (1) suppress qualified Dem votes (2) a bunch of ***** have always wanted national ID cards to tighten Big Brother’s control over citizens.
